Personalized Learning for Your Child, Live or Self-Paced.
New Haven is a virtual academy for grades 6–12. We offer ultra-small class sizes and differentiated curriculum that provide an environment tailored to your child's needs and learning style. Families can choose live, teacher-led online classes, or fully self-paced classes that fit around family life. We also offer family-managed curriculum packages for homeschooling families.
Discussion, Not Lecture
At New Haven, we believe that students are more motivated to learn when they are in the driver's seat. Traditional education focuses on teacher-centered, lecture-based learning. We believe in student-centered learning through discussions, creative projects, and collaboration with peers.
Differentiated Education for Everyone
Our curriculum is tailored to each student's needs, so every learner is both supported and challenged. We use a competency-based model that meets students where they are and helps them "level up." Instead of unfocused, below-grade remediation, we use curriculum that is designed to help students identify and close skill gaps, while still building on strengths. Honors, Advanced Placement, and college prep classes are available for students ready to go further.
Selective Admissions
Admission to New Haven is selective. We look for students who want to learn but may not thrive in traditional classrooms. Active thinkers learn best when they are allowed to question, explore, discuss, and make choices about their learning. These students may resist classrooms that ask them primarily to listen to lectures and absorb information passively. New Haven is designed for students whose abilities may not be fully reflected in conventional classrooms. Every applicant completes a placement assessment, and our admissions team meets with each family for interviews before offering a place.
Closing Gaps, Moving Ahead
Our competency-based curriculum is designed to help students close mastery gaps and advance one to three grade levels in a single year. Students fill in what they missed, build real understanding, and move forward with confidence.
About the Academy
New Haven Virtual Academy believes every bright, curious student deserves a school where they can do their best work.
Our Mission
We provide equity-focused, accessible online education that holds students to rigorous academic standards, in a flexible format that puts families first. Every student, whatever their background or circumstances, gets the challenge, support and attention they need to succeed.
Who We Serve
We serve bright students who want to learn but may not thrive in traditional brick-and-mortar classrooms, where passive learning and authoritarian structures can get in the way of curiosity. Here, students learn in small classes with teachers who know them, respect their voice, and meet them where they are.
A Note from Our Founder
Roy Gil, Founder & Technology Teacher
I started New Haven Virtual Academy because I believe in the rigor of traditional curriculum, but not the teacher-centered, lecture-based passive learning that goes on in traditional classrooms. I belive that holding students to high standards academically, while giving them the autonomy to engage their natural curiosity, is the formula to teach students who want to learn, but may struggle in traditional classrooms.
Our Faculty
Our faculty have a combination of higher education and practical, workplace experience that help them prepare students for both collge and the real world. With ultra-small class sizes, our teachers have time to devote to working one-on-one, so none of our students fall through the cracks.

Course Offerings
We offer courses for grades 6–12, and families choose how much support they want. Pick one option for every course, or mix them.
Your child joins scheduled classes on Google Meet with a teacher and a small group of classmates, with assignments and grades kept in Google Classroom.
- About 4 students per class
- Real-time discussion and instruction
- A set weekly timetable
Your child takes the same asynchronous courses on their own schedule, and one of our teachers manages the class: grading work, giving feedback and answering questions.
- Teacher feedback on every assignment
- Grades and progress reports from the teacher
- No scheduled class times
Use our asynchronous courses as your homeschool curriculum. Your child works through the lessons, readings and assignments in Google Classroom, and you grade their work yourself.
- Complete lessons and assignments ready to use
- Answer keys and rubrics for parents
- Your family sets the pace
Placement Testing
Every new student takes a diagnostic test so we can place them in the right level for each subject, whatever their grade on paper.
Common Core Aligned
Our courses align to the Common Core State Standards, so students cover what they need and can move to or from other schools with confidence.
Grades 6–12
Middle School covers grades 6–8 and High School covers grades 9–12, including AP courses for students who want an extra challenge.
Curriculum
Every course at New Haven Virtual Academy is custom designed by Olive Tree Learning.
Designed by Olive Tree Learning
Olive Tree Learning creates differentiated, tailored curriculum for top K–12 schools, colleges and universities around the world. Their courses are built to meet students at different levels, so every learner can access the material while still being challenged.
Engaging and Rigorous
The curriculum is designed to engage today's generation of learners while keeping the academic rigor of a traditional education. Students get serious content, taught in a way that holds their attention.
How a Class Runs
In live classes, students prepare readings or problem sets in advance, and class time is spent discussing and working through problems together. In self-paced classes, students work through recorded lessons, readings and assignments on their own schedule.
Work is Managed Through Google Classroom
Every course has a Google Classroom page with the syllabus, readings, assignments and due dates. Live classes meet on Google Meet, and self-paced lessons are posted in Google Classroom.
Monthly Parent Progress Reports
Written feedback is given on every major assignment, and narrative reports are sent to parents monthly, alongside letter grades. Parents have full transparency on grading and academic progress.
Screen Dependence Recovery Program
New Haven offers unique, one-of-a-kind support for students who are experiencing social media, video game, and screen-related mental health conditions. We provide one-on-one coaching for families of students suffering from screen addiction, "screen depression" or related mental health conditions. If you are interested in learning more about enrolling your child in the Screen Dependence Recovery Program, or joining the parent resource workshops, please contact us below for more information.
